LEARNING FROM NATURE: WHAT FALL TEACHES US

Every year, the tree descends into death to become whole again…

Fall is the season of anticipating and accepting change. It is time to look at the darker things in life, as we move forward towards the bitter winter. Survival is never guaranteed, even lesser so as the world freezes and violently storms. Days are darker. Days are colder. The sky is duller.

But during this time of death, there are so many colours. The trees turn into fire, their leaves burning away as they slide into death. Just skeletons left, they hold onto their bones in the frigid cold. And in the spring, they blossom again.

We constantly move in cycles of dark and light, sun and moon, man and woman. We must accept the death of our ego, our habits, our biases. Every death leads to a new flower, blooming in the garden.

Let the trees release their leaves. Let the world fall into a long sleep. When we’re ready, the sun will rise.

ACTION STEPS FOR FALL

Take lessons these lessons from nature, so you can move closer towards harmony and balance within yourself. Here are some actionable steps:

  • Let go of what no longer serves you. Trees release their leaves, because keeping the leaves alive means using too much energy that would be better off stored. The leaves no longer serve their purpose of creating energy for the tree, so they are let go. Do the same with relationships, negative beliefs, and material goods that consume more energy than the value they return.

  • Embrace change as it comes. Everything is in flux as we move from summer to autumn. Expect the unexpected and understand that the only constant is change. If the changes in your life become overwhelming, repeat to yourself, “Everything is changing. Everything is confusing. I accept that everything is in a state of flux right now, and that is okay”. By understanding your thoughts objectively like this, and embracing the confusion, you will experience less anxiety during these unpredictable times.

  • Understand that every end is a new beginning. The trees don’t fret when they lose their leaves. They know that by releasing the old, they are making way for new, beautiful blossoms in the spring. Whether it be the end of a relationship, a job, or even the death of a loved one, death, both literally and metaphorically, leads to rebirth. This does not mean one should not healthily grieve over what is lost, rather, just know that every death leads to the recycling of energy back into the earth that will become a new life.

  • There is beauty in everything. It might seem like fall is the season of death, with all the flowers and plants from summer dying away, but remember to always see the beauty in this. Appreciate the gorgeous fall colours, the cozy sweaters, and the delicious fall food.

  • It’s okay to slow down and rest as nature enters hibernation. As the days get shorter and colder, you might find yourself to be sleeping more and going outside less. While it’s important to keep active and healthy habits, know when your body needs rest, and don’t judge it for it. Listen to your body and adjust your schedule to accommodate the changing season.

  • Trust that like the trees, life goes through seasons. There will always be ebbs and flows in life. If your mood is dimming, fret not, know it is just the changing season that you need to readjust to. Consider taking a vitamin D supplement to accommodate for the lower amounts of daylight. If this time of year is difficult for you, work towards acceptance, and remind yourself that spring is right around the corner.

Wishing you love, wellness, and health during the autumn season.
